Stawell is positioned at the mouth of the Grampians National Park, in Victoria's Wimmera region. As a result it acts as a base for tourists keen to explore this remarkable mountainous attraction. The town experienced a period of immense wealth during Victoria's Gold Rush, and today grand historical buildings still line its streets.

Residents are employed in industries such as brick-production, goldmining and farming. From Stawell Railway Station, V/Line coaches travel to surrounding regional areas such as Ballarat and Horsham. The commercial centre of town can be found along Main Street, where there are restaurants, cafes and supermarkets. Duck into Magdala on the Lake for a fantastic a la carte dining experience overlooking a lake, or make the trip to the Koala Tavern in nearby Dadswells Bridge to see the amazing 14 metre high Giant Koala.

There are five schools in Stawell, including Stawell Primary School and Stawell Secondary College. Central Park is Stawell's main sports ground. In addition to the various clubs that share its facilities, it is home to the famous Stawell Gift, Australia's oldest short distance running race.
