In the 1800s, Wheelers Hill was a rest stop for weary travellers on their way into the city. The journey took an unthinkable six to eight hours. Today, the trip takes little more than twenty-five minutes on the Monash Freeway.

The suburb's well-established brick houses are complemented by large blocks of land and healthy bushland. There are eight schools in the vicinity, including Wheelers Hill Secondary College, which was once attended by the lead singer of The Living End, and Caulfield Grammar School, which is adjacent to Jells Park. Jells Park is an incredible, large recreational facility in the Dandenong Creek Valley. Cycling and walking trails wind through wetlands and billabongs before converging on Jells Lake, where fishing is allowed. Madeline's at Jells, a cafe and restaurant within the park, is regularly booked out during the summer months. The Monash Gallery of Art and the Wheelers Hill Library are also located near the park.

Nine bus routes travel through Wheeler's Hill on their way to surrounding suburbs such as Knoxfield, Glen Waverley and Chadstone. The Wheelers Hill Shopping Centre is located on Jells Road and contains a Woolworths supermarket and restaurants, cafes and specialty stores. Centro Brandon Park at the corner of Ferntree Gully Road and Springvale Road boasts 98 stores and a colourful food court.
