Historically the first settlement in Victoria, Portland was developed to become a major commercial port for fishing and agriculture. Since 1986 it has also been used as a port for the nearby Alcoa aluminium smelter, which is Australia's third largest. Due to the naturally deep water in the port, and its location between Adelaide and Melbourne, the area has become a significant centre for the transport of fish, grain and aluminium via sea.
Cape Bridgewater is a mere ten minute drive from the heart of Portland and is thought to be one of Australia's best beaches, particularly due to the presence of a colony of fur seals that reside there. Portland has a variety of fishing spots for beginners and advanced fishermen, both onshore and off. The Portland Maritime Discovery Centre offers fascinating exhibits, particularly for young children. It even includes the skeleton of a Sperm Whale.
