The suburb is situated perfectly in the outer metropolitan area of Melbourne and residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to transport. There are two train stations, Mitcham and Heatherdale, served by the Belgrave and Lilydale lines. It takes about forty minutes to reach the city on the train. Thanks to the Eastern Freeway, Mitcham is only a thirty minute drive out of Melbourne. In the other direction you will find the Dandenongs and the Yarra Valley.

Mullauna College is the prominent secondary school in Mitcham. There are also four primary schools. For a bit of culture, Schwerkolt Cottage is an attraction from the 1880s found near the Yarran Dheran bushland. It is now a local history museum surrounded by barbeque facilities, a children's playground and walking tracks.
