Hawthorn has a certain old-fashioned charm. Located fifteen minutes from the city, its narrow streets are full of Victorian cottages and Edwardian mansions, though there are plenty of high-rise apartment blocks as well.

Find coffee shops, cafes, restaurants and bars on Glenferrie Road, or boutiques, organic health food stores and hairdressers in Auburn Village. Porgie and Mr Jones is a whimsical all-day breakfast cafe on Auburn Road. Head to Central Gardens for a barbeque, where the kids can climb the giant rocket in the playground. From Hawthorn, Glenferrie or Auburn Station catch a train into the city on the Belgrave/Lilydale or Alamein lines, or jump on one of the trams running along Glenferrie Road.
