Emerald is in a beautiful location next to the Dandenongs, between Belgrave and Cockatoo. It is less than an hour's drive from the Melbourne CBD and within its boundaries you will find Melbourne's second largest reservoir, the Cardinia Reservoir. Nearby, Lake Treganowan surrounds Emerald Lake Park, which provides local families with barbeque facilities, playgrounds, walking tracks and even fishing opportunities. The Emerald Museum, which is full of local historical archives, is also on the edge of the park.

The famous stream train attraction, Puffing Billy, which runs from Belgrave to Gembrook, has three stations in Emerald. It also provides a route for the annual fun run, the Great Train Race, where participants aim to beat the train to the finish line at Emerald Lake, a distance of 13.2km.

Emerald has a delectable selection of shops and cafes along the start of Kilvington Drive near Heroes Avenue. A supermarket and several other retail storescan also be found across from the Worrell Reserve, near the Emerald Fire Station.
