Semi-rural Bangholme is located between Chelsea and Keysborough in Melbourne's south-east. Most of its land is used by the Melbourne Water Eastern Sewage Treatment Plant, though there are also privately owned paddocks used for agriculture and horses. Bangholme is bordered by the EastLink tollway and as a result travel into the city and other outlying eastern suburbs is very convenient. It takes approximately forty minutes to reach the inner city.
The National Water Sports Centre is located in Bangholme on the Patterson River. It is an inland water course which was built in 1988, when Melbourne unsuccessfully put in a bid for the Olympic Games. Many of Melbourne's sports clubs use its facilities for rowing, water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing and boat shows. The Dandenong Creek Valley Bike Trail also passes through the centre.
There is one school in the suburb: the Bangholme campus of St Leonard's College. A range of other public and private schools can be found ten minutes away in Dandenong and Dandenong South. Supermarkets, retail stores and Dandenong Plaza, a large regional shopping centre, can also be found in these areas.
