A historic township north of Melbourne, to the west of the Hume Highway, Avenel was settled in the 1830s. These days the town can be accessed via a V-Line station on the Melbourne-Albury line.
Avenel's most famous citizen was Ned Kelly, who lived there in his younger years. There is a local legend about him saving a boy from drowning in the local creek. You can visit the graves of Kelly's father and brother in the local cemetery.
Accommodation and fine dining are available at the Harvest Home Country House Hotel, built in the 1860s and well-preserved. The hotel contains a Victorian dining room and a garden pavilion. Fowles Winery is another attraction in the area. The Cellar Door cafe, open for breakfast and lunch, was listed in the Age Good Food Guide 2013.
Avenel is home to several sporting clubs, including AFL, netball, tennis, cricket and golf. The town has a local primary school, with over a hundred pupils.
