Popularly known as the home of Barry Humphries's fictional Dame Edna Everage character, Moonee Ponds is a vibrant suburb just fifteen minutes north-west of the city centre. One of Melbourne's largest and most popular horse-racing tracks is the Moonee Valley Racecourse, where the Cox Plate is held every October.

The former Essendon Town Hall has been re-established as the Clocktower Centre, a performing arts theatre and function hall. The creation of this centre has provided a great space for community arts projects, and it is conveniently located at the Moonee Ponds Junction on Mount Alexander and Pascoe Vale roads. Shopping facilities can be found at Moonee Ponds Central, where residents have access to a Coles supermarket and a Kmart in addition to a number of specialty stores.

Moonee Ponds Station is located on the Craigieburn line and trains take less than twenty minutes to reach Flinders Street Station. Tram route 82 ends at the Moonee Ponds Junction, and route 59 continues past this point on to Airport West. There are over ten bus routes that terminate at this junction and serve the area. Moonee Valley has three primary schools: Moonee Ponds West Primary School, St Monica's Primary School and Moonee Ponds Central School. There are a number of other reputable schools in the greater area.
