Lilydale behaves like a bustling country town with areas of industry. Situated on Melbourne's eastern fringe, it is only forty-five minutes from the CBD on either the train or the EastLink freeway. Lilydale Station is the terminus for the Lilydale line and trains are available to take you to the city every thirty minutes.

The suburb is home to four secondary schools and five primary schools. It also has a Swinburne University of Technology campus offering TAFE and university courses. For shopping, there is The Olive Tree Shopping Centre on Main Street, and Stockland Lilydale Shopping Centre on Hutchinson Street. Lilydale Lake is a popular spot for a walk, a run or a bike ride. You can even try your luck at some fishing.

Some of Victoria's best wineries and fresh fruit farms are just a short drive away in the Yarra Valley.
