Kerang is a historical farming region set along the banks of the Loddon River. The town has a small but down to earth working-class population. Agriculture and horticulture are the mainstays in terms of industry.

The main commercial district is situated in the heart of town, where Wellington Street and Victoria Street meet. Here there are takeaway shops, banks, pubs, restaurants and a medical clinic. Residents can reach Melbourne via trains that run from Kerang Station on the Swan Hill line. The town is located at the junction of the Loddon Valley and Murray Valley highways, making travel to larger regional towns such as Echuca, Bendigo and Swan Hill fairly convenient.

There are five schools, including Kerang Technical School and Kerang Primary School. The town is also home to the Kerang Learning Centre, a facility that provides adult learning opportunities in areas such as construction, first aid and computes.

A group of over fifty lakes, swamps and lagoons known as the Kerang Wetlands can be found on the town's outskirts. This is a birdwatchers paradise & home to an astounding and spectacular population of waterbirds. The area is also incredibly popular for water-skiing, boating and fishing. The first three lakes, Reedy Lake, Middle Lake and Reedy Lake Sanctuary, have grassy picnic areas, shallow water holes fit for swimming and boating ramps. Lake Charm, further along the highway, has tennis courts and camping grounds overlooking the water.
