Situated next to Essendon Airport, which is no longer used as a major commercial airport, Airport West is only twenty minutes from the CBD. Previously an aviation industrial area, the suburb has developed into a residential space for growing families.

McNamara Avenue north of Roberts Road has a selection of shops popular with locals, but if serious shopping is needed, then Airport West has its own Westfield Shoppingtown. This complex houses 167 stores including a cinema, and major retailers such as Coles, Kmart and Target. If that isn't enough, Essendon DFO is just five minutes away.

Tram route 59 travels from Airport West to Elizabeth Street in the city. Nine bus routes serve the suburb, and residents have access to three major freeways: the Western Ring Road, the Calder and the Tullamarine.
